Beach Soccer

Beach soccer is a spectacular and dynamic variant of traditional soccer, played on sand, typically near the seaside or on specially prepared sand fields. The game is characterized by a fast pace, the technical skills required, and the informal, fun environment in which it is often played.

Here are the main features of beach soccer:

  • Field: the beach soccer field is a rectangle of natural or artificial sand, smaller than a traditional soccer field. It measures between 35-37 meters in length and 26-28 meters in width. There are no precise boundary lines like in traditional soccer, except for the goal lines and the halfway line.
  • Teams: each team consists of 5 players, including the goalkeeper and four outfield players. Teams can make unlimited substitutions, keeping the game very dynamic and physically demanding.
  • Duration: the match is divided into three periods of 12 minutes each, with a short break between periods. If the score is tied, extra time or penalties may follow, as in 11-a-side soccer.
  • Ball: a slightly softer ball is used compared to the one in 11-a-side soccer, to facilitate control on the sand and reduce the risk of injuries, considering the hard kicks and falls on an uneven surface.
  • Substitutions: unlimited substitutions are allowed, similar to 5-a-side soccer.
  • Goals: the goalposts are similar to those used in 5-a-side soccer, typically measuring 5.5x2 meters.
  • Rules: the rules are simplified compared to traditional soccer to adapt to the sandy playing surface. For instance, there is no offside, and throw-ins are taken by foot instead of by hand. Additionally, fouls are punished more strictly, and free kicks are direct, leading to more goal-scoring opportunities.

Beach soccer is famous for its fast pace, spectacular plays, and relaxed atmosphere, making it popular not only in official competitions but also in amateur matches on beaches around the world. Thanks to the sandy surface, bicycle kicks, creative dribbling, and long-range shots are common in this high-intensity sport.
